Promoting your best worker to supervisor sounds smart. They know the work, and you trust them.

But you may have added fuel to the fire. Now you have **one less productive worker** and **an inexperienced supervisor**. Doing the work and supervising others take different skills.

### Signs it's backfiring

- Your supervisor still *does* the work instead of leading it
- Production and quality slip
- Your team skips them and comes straight to you

### How to fix it

1. **Gather evidence.** Find the numbers that reveal poor performance.
2. **Set expectations.** Show what "done right" looks like.
3. **Ask, don't tell.** Have employees explain their approach and what they need.
4. **Create competition.** Make results visible. Recognize effort, reward results.

### The bottom line

When promoting your best worker backfires, the problem isn't the promotion. **It's the vacuum left behind.**
